What the Riders had to Say:
The tour was amazing an incredible experience!!  I have already contacted the WCC (Woodlands Cycle Group – Houston).  So hopefully you will get many others from Texas for next year.

Yes, we have a new tweak route. For the sixth year in a row, we continue to make subtle changes geared to improve the experience of all our new and past riders. Our new route was updated here on our website November 25, 2011. You can see more of it in this link.

The official list of affiliated hotels for the 2012 Vuelta Puerto Rico has been released. As you will see, these are divided into three different cities

San Juan – For the Pre and Post Event days (bike storage available in our affiliated hotels)

Ponce – night of Friday, January 27, 2012

Mayaguez/Rincon – night of Saturday, January 28, 2012

If you are traveling from abroad, we strongly suggest that you arrive no later than Wednesday, January 25, 2012. This will give you ample time to tweak your bike and familiarize yourself with San Juan. We also remind you that it’s winter in most non Caribbean destinations which means, you could get snagged in a snowstorm missing the fun of La Vuelta Puerto Rico. Play it safe and try to arrive a few days earlier.

IMPORTANT:

We will ONLY provide luggage transport to and from the hotels officially affiliated to La Vuelta Puerto Rico. If you choose to stay in another hotel, you need to bring your luggage to the start on day 1 where we will be happy to transport it to the Hilton in Ponce on Friday and to Holiday Inn in Mayaguez on Saturday and back to the start/finish line Sunday.

The start/finish line this year will be the Third Millenium Park which is also known as El Escambron in San Juan. This is a sprawling facility that has an amazing view, ample parking and its centrally located between the hotels we have chosen for 2012.

We remind you that as part of your registration package, you will be provided with luggage tags. In these tags, you will circle the hotels where you want us to take your luggage. If you fail to correctly circle your hotel, we will automatically deliver it to the following headquarter hotel where you can then pick them up. These are the headquarter hotels in Ponce and Mayaguez:

In Ponce: Hilton Ponce Golf & Casino Resort

In Mayaguez: Holiday Inn Mayaguez & Tropical Casino

Last but not least, we remind you that all our affiliated hotels in San Juan will be providing bike box storage to our participants, free of charge. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop us a note at: info@vueltapr.com

We strongly recommend that everyone reading this blog entry purchase this months issue of Bicycling Magazine.

MY BIKE WENT TO PUERTO RICO by Bill Gifford is a day-to-day account of his experience in La Vuelta Puerto Rico this past year. Read eight (8) full pages of Bill’s experience and learn why La Vuelta is … more than cycling!!

See the interactive maps of La Vuelta Puerto Rico on Bicycling Magazine!!

Tienda BIKE in Hato Rey, owned and operated by Fernando Zambrana will have twenty (20) brand new bikes. These are …

2011 FUJI Altamira 3.0 with the Shimano 105
(See them HERE)

Fernando has told us that “This is the SAME bike that Carlos Sastre and Dennis Menchov will be riding in the 2011 Tour de France, Giro D' Italia and Vuelta España”. We think those other guys will have a little upgrade on the components though!!.

The official route for 2011 has just been released!!

The entire route has been plotted on MapMyRide and the Cue Sheets have also been updated to reflect the changes made by our staff.

Question:

Before we make the hotel reservations, we would like to confirm the starting and ending point for each day so that we can select hotels closest to each start/finish. Based on the route listed on the Website, it seems like the first day you end in Las Delicias Park and the next morning you start from Las Delicias Park again.  However on the Hotel tab for Ponce mentions that Ponce Hilton is the arrival place for La Vuelta 2011.  Can you confirm one way or another?

In Mayaguez it arrives at the town square but it seems like it departs from the Mayaguez Holiday Inn… Is this correct?

I will appreciate if you can help us with these questions…

Regards,

A rider from California and from Florida

Answer:

First of all, thanks for signing up for La Vuelta Puerto Rico ... we look forward to meeting you all in January!!.

Assuming that you stay at one of our listed hotels, distance to the start everyday should not be much of an issue. Here is a little more information that may help answer your question.

In San Juan, chances are that we will leave from a location in Old San Juan. At this time, it all depends on the number of riders that we have and that is something that will be clear on December 1. (we close November 30, or before if cap is reached). In any case, all hotels are within walking distance or the most 3 miles away which is nothing considering you will ride 375 the following 3 days. Feel free to pick any one listed in our site depending on your individual preference.

In Ponce, we will ride into the Plaza las Delicias of Ponce. There our Road Captains will "drop off" anyone staying at the Ramada or Melia Hotels where your luggage will be waiting. Then, the rest of the riders will continue to the Ponce Hilton where we end the day … those staying at the Holiday Inn further up the road will have to simply log in the few extra miles.  The next morning, a Road Captain will guide those in the Plaza las Delicias out of Ponce while those at the Hilton and Holiday Inn will join further up the road.

In Mayaguez, same thing as in Ponce. We will ride into the Plaza of Mayaguez dropping off those at the Howard Johnson or Colonial Hotels and from there continue to the Mayaguez Resort and Casino and Holiday Inn further up the road. The next morning we convene at the Holiday Inn Mayaguez while a Road Captain will bring those at other hotels to the start line.

La VUELTA Puerto Rico informs that our official date for 2011 has been advanced by a week and will now take place from January 28-30, 2011. The City of Mayaguez will host the Baseball Caribbean Series the first week of February, which limits the number of rooms available for our event.

If you are interested in participating in La VUELTA 2011, we strongly encourage you to sign up as soon as registrations open (June 15, 2010). With the international television and magazine coverage we will receive this year, we will surely sell out at 600 riders in record time.

Another Vuelta came to an exciting conclusion last night. I hope you all had as much fun as I did. It takes a lot of hard work to pull an event like this off and I’d like to take a moment to express my gratitude to Suhail Medina, Myrna Rosado and the rest of the Vuelta staff, the road captains, the drivers, the medics, the police officers, the town officials, the volunteers, the photographers, the videographers, the writers and everyone else who put in the time and effort into making this year’s Vuelta such a success.

Most of all, to our great community of cyclists, THANK YOU! It was a pleasure riding with you. We hope to see you again next year.

Hi there everyone. Training for La VUELTA is now in full gear for most if not all of you and we wish to correct some information related to the accumulated climbs of our tour. We had incorrectly informed that La VUELTA had 18,000 feet of climbing in the three days but its really 8,000. That was a typographical error!!

So, if you have been training for 18,000 feet, then I guess you are in good shape right now!! Stay tuned here for more news and remember that our registrations under the regular price are until midnight, December 14, 2009.

Bicycling Magazine Online is recommending our tour "La VUELTA" of Puerto Rico as one of the sixteen (16) "Best Gift for Bicyclists 2009" and we STRONGLY AGREE!! (See all 16 recomendations in HERE, ours is number 16!!)

Bicycling Magazine Online states ...

Vuelta PR: A Tropical Ride Around Puerto Rico. A mid-winter riding vacation is a great gift for cyclists, especially if Mother Nature regularly shuts down your season each year. One warm, beautiful, and reasonably priced option is The Lighthouse Cycling Tour of Puerto Rico: aka La VUELTA. La VUELTA is a fully supported three-day loop starting and ending in San Juan that explores 375 miles of the island's coastline. Riders choose between three groups of varying ability (with a no-drop policy so slower riders aren't left behind), and the chance to pedal through tropical rainforest, coconut plantations, exotic beaches, world-class marinas and 43 coastal towns. Click here for more information, to register, or to purchase as a gift.

We have extended the regular price of $379 until midnight Monday, December 14, 2009 due to Bicycling Magazine Online's announcement. This will give a fair chance for the readers of Bicycling Magazine to read about us and sign up.

We are pleased to announce two improvements to our already spectacular tour!

For the first time, the route of the 2010 VUELTA will be marked with arrowed signs to provide directional assistance to riders.

Additionally, the 2010 VUELTA will be a "No Drop" ride. A team of two cyclists will serve as "Lanterne Rouge", riding behind the entire peloton with a SAG wagon to assure its successful arrival at the end of each day. Stay tuned at our blog for more details!!

Registrations open September 9, 2009!!

"Lantern Rouge" ... term used in professional cycling races for the last rider!!

The Road Captains

Our Road Captains are a group of men and women from all walks of life that share a passion for cycling and for Puerto Rico. All are either born or raised in the island and have collectively ridden their bikes around enough times to make anyone dizzy. All are La VUELTA veterans some of which have been Road Captains since our inception. They bring experience, knowledge & leadership for the benefit of all those participating.

The role of these Road Captains is to ensure guidance and leadership to our participants while ensuring that you all arrive from point A to point B within the programmed times.

We are happy to announce the appointment of these fine Road Captains for the 2010 edition of La VUELTA. Alphabetically, these are ...  <learn more>

Many of our participants come from as far as Spain and California. To make the trip even more worthwhile we are presenting three new offerings. The San Juan City Bike Tour which is a 45 mile historical ride around the San Juan area the day before La VUELTA. We will also be offering a Tour to El Yunque Rainforest and a Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Adventure in Fajardo on Monday, the day after La VUELTA. This will cap off an unforgettable trip to Puerto Rico. <more here>

At 12:26 pm, July 7, 2009 we open our new website that will be loaded with all the information you will need to make your participation in the VUELTA that much better. We are making improvements that are geared towards once again exceeding the expectations of the most discriminating cyclist. Please help us spread the word.

PS: We have added a 45 mile, 4 hour guided San Juan City Bike Tour for the day before the VUELTA starts and we also added two post Tour Day Trips; the El Yunque Tropical Rain Forest Daytrip and the Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Evening Tour for the day after the VUELTA is completed.  This will cap off a memorable week in Puerto Rico for all its participants. (Bio Bay Capacity ... 140 persons ONLY!!)

The Puerto Rico Tourism Company announced on Friday, January 11, 2008 through its Executive Director that the Lighthouse Cycling Tour of Puerto Rico is one of the nine (9) scheduled sports events in Puerto Rico for 2008 that is expected to have the greatest impact on our local economy.

We feel extremely proud and humbled to be mentioned among such a fine group of sports events in our only second year and look forward to exceeding the expectations of all its participants just as we have in the past editions.
